Responding to Facebook “Conversations”

15N_ShowLogoApHC Members and Friends,

Despite the fact that social media is not a good platform for debate, nor is it a practical channel for correcting misinformation or responding to gossip, the ApHC is compelled to offer a few bits of commentary. By the way, the “ApHC” includes board members, staff and anyone who pays dues.

We again acknowledge and apologize for the unfortunate errors that resulting in at least two National/Youth World award saddles with misspellings. Recipients have been offered a replacement or compensation. It’s safe to say that such an oversight will not occur in the future!

At this point, our biggest concern is the impact of negative online chatter. There is a difference between “input or feedback” and “self-inflicted wounds.” The ApHC Board operates with genuine interest in member opinions and recommendations, many of which have resulted in changes to rules or policies. In the case of sponsorships and awards, a small group has already been designated to evaluate and organize the overall sponsor and recognition program. If you have specific suggestions or contacts to share regarding potential support from sponsor groups or companies, please forward those to Dena Raggio, Marketing Committee Chair.

For those who are interested in direct communication with Board members, that process is always appropriate and helpful. The September Board of Directors meeting will be held in Avon (Cleveland), Ohio, and as always, is open to ApHC members.

As we move forward, you are asked to consider these thoughts and corrections:
• Online negativity can cause current or potential members, sponsors and others to turn away from what we believe is a great community of Appaloosa folks.
• ApHC entry fees are not only competitive with other major event costs, they are considerably less than most. Whether members would favor increases in order to “upgrade” potential awards is a matter of debate.
• No ApHC staff member is paid a six-figure salary, much less a million dollars! IRS 990 forms are available for confirmation.
• No one has issued a “gag order” on board members or others. A social media policy statement simply outlines appropriate use of various communications channels and that policy is available for viewing.
• Lastly, we really are all in this venture together and the ApHC community needs each individual to participate as an ambassador and thoughtful contributor.

Membership Renewal Alert

small web bannerFor anyone purchasing or renewing an ApHC membership BEFORE DECEMBER 1ST, the current rate will apply. That’s also the deadline for renewal to ensure uninterrupted Journal deliver. In case you have not heard or read, individual dues will increase to $60 after that date. Other memberships, enrollment fees and some service fees will also increase for 2015. Reminder, the membership form is available on-line and we’ll also be printing one in the November issue of the Journal. Current members will also receive an old-fashioned renewal form by mail.

ApHC Notes

ApHC-75th-anniversaryI’m sure many of you have been on the edge of your virtual seat waiting for the 2014 Official Handbook. Printing is later than we’d like, but the Handbook in its digital form is up on the appaloosa.com site. We’ll be posting a summary of additions and changes … soon.

The Color Breed Council’s “International Equine Judges Seminar” wrapped up last week in Tulsa. All ApHC-carded judges are required to attend the seminar once every three years. A new feature this year was the Judging Academy, sort of a preview for applicants and folks who are thinking about getting judging credentials. The program also has portions that should appeal to exhibitors who want to know more about how various classes are evaluated. And, for everyone who needs to get a better handle on how classes are scored, there is quite a bit of information and practice on scoring and scribing. Plans are already being made for next year’s academy, so stay tuned for updates.

We ended 2013 with 12,876 ApHC members. If you haven’t renewed your membership, today would be a good time. The online process is pretty simple. Be sure to get yourself and/or your horses enrolled in specific programs such as Saddle Log, Non-Pro, etc. And, we’ll take this opportunity to encourage you to recruit ONE NEW MEMBER. Appaloosa Horse Club activities aren’t much fun if we don’t have other members to share them.

Industry trends have us wondering about what the future holds for registrations and equine activities. As with most other breed associations, the ApHC numbers are more than a bit sobering. In 2013, we registered 2,654 Appaloosas. That’s almost a 30% decline over the past 10 years. Lots of theories about why and lots of legitimate concern about what role breed registries will have in the world of equine sports and recreational riding as we move ahead. For the record, we recorded 3,541 transfers and issued 250 performance permits last year. And, for those who always ask, it was almost an even split between Appaloosa X Appaloosa and Appaloosa X Outcross permits.

Don’t miss out, renew your membership today!

member cardWe know that ApHC members sometimes wait until later in the year to renew their membership, but during this 75th Anniversary year, we think you’ll want to be connected sooner rather than later. The Appaloosa Journal and our various social media sites are routinely providing unique perspectives on ApHC history. There are some new components of the Appaloosa Members’ Plus program that you can probably use. And, there is a variety of very cool anniversary stuff — calendar, apparel, commemorative registration certificates and, oh by the way, great discounts on advertising.

Renew today on the appaloosa.com website or give us a call. We appreciate your past involvement and we certainly want to say THANK YOU for being part of the Appaloosa community.

The Appaloosa Horse Club is excited to announce the new affinity partnership with Equi-Rescue, ltd. Equi-Rescue is the nation’s premier roadside assistance for people trailering horses. Equi-Rescue offers their coverage through National Safe Drivers, a 50-year-old company with amazing reviews.

Annual Membership Meeting

In case you are planning to be in the Jackson neighborhood for the 2010 ApHC Membership Meeting, the date was listed incorrectly in the June magazine. The date is actually THURSDAY JUNE 24TH, 1:00 PM. in the Trade Mart Building at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds.

Membership/Novice info online

ApHC has updated Web site access to include novice eligibility information for those members who haven’t yet renewed their membership for 2010. Since so many members purchase membership at the first show they attend, it’s important for show organizers and members alike to have access to accurate information on the novice status of those exhibitors. Visit www.appaloosa.com, click on “Show” and then click on “Verify Your Membership and Novice Eligibility Here”. Type in a membership number and click “Submit” for the latest information. This is a great tool for regional shows to use when checking in horses and riders at the show office. Instant access to membership and novice information is just a few clicks away.
