Don’t worry about your spell checking program, it’s really the Apalousey Trail Ride. This year’s ride, August 8-10, is the 11th annual all-breed fundraising event for the Appaloosa Museum. Held at the Pony Club Grounds on George Hatley’s ranch near Deary, Idaho, the benefit is popular with folks who enjoy riding through scenic country and/or those who may want to come just for the Dutch Oven Dinner. There will also be a silent auction, a performance by Idaho Old Time Fiddlers, wagon rides, and a bunch of other fun and mingling.
The cost for riders is $75, non-riders $30 and dinner guests $12. For more information contact the Appaloosa Museum at (208) 882-5578 x279 or visit www.appaloosamuseum.org.
The ApHC has canceled our contracts for room blocks during the upcoming National Show with the Regency Inn and Quality Inn hotel properties in Jackson, MS. These properties do not meet ApHC standards for room uprades/renovations, on-site security and other safety features. If you have rooms booked at either property, we recommend that you re-book your rooms at an alternate hotel.
We recommend re-booking with the Cabot Lodge Millsaps in Jackson. The Cabot Lodge offers a great room rate of $85/night and is located on North State Street – less than 5 minutes from the Mississippi State Fairgrounds. In addition, you’ll receive complimentary breakfast each morning and a complimentary two-hour cocktail reception each evening. All ApHC guests at the Cabot Lodge will stay in newly renovated rooms as well and you’ll love the lodge atmosphere of this wonderful hotel. There is also plenty of parking for oversize vehicles.
Please call 1.800.874.4737 to book your room and ask for the Appaloosa rate using code APPALO. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you but rest assured that the folks at the Cabot Lodge will do everything possible to make your stay a pleasant one.
If you have any questions, please contact the ApHC Show Department at 208.882.5578 ext. 400. Best wishes for safe travel to the National Show. We’ll see you in Jackson!
Iola Hatley is this year’s inductee into the Appaloosa Hall of Fame. We made it semi-official this past weekend in a presentation at the museum. A video and announcement will also be included at the awards banquet in Jackson during the National Show. Since Iola doesn’t plan on making the trip, it seemed like a good idea to have a bit of ceremony for her and give local folks the chance to share the moment.
Mr. Appaloosa, George Hatley, was obviously pleased at the recognition given to the best office manager he ever had. Several Museum board members were also in attendance and added their congratulations.
Iola received a plaque, a bouquet of roses, a lifetime membership jacket and embossed membership card. She expressed genuine appreciation for the Hall of Fame honor and seemed especially glad that she no longer needs to borrow George’s lifetime member jacket.
Juli Thorson offered a testimonial tribute and recounted her early days at the Appaloosa Horse Club which involved some serious “orientation” and training from Iola. For more than 30 years, Iola captained the office staff and, according to Juli, made sure everyone knew the full scope of operations and could handle questions on everything from registration to trail rides.
The Appaloosa Horse Club is pleased to announce the results from the 2008 Board of Directors election.
There were contested elections in two territories. In Territory I (Zone A) the new director will be Lynette Thompson, Garfield, Washington. In Territory III (Zone A) Jim Jirkovsky, Kearney, Nebraska, is re-elected. Each will serve a three-term on the board.
The following directors ran unopposed and are therefore re-elected to an additional three-year term:
In Territory II (Zone A), Dennis Dean, Apple Valley, California;
In Territory IV (Zone A), Larry Baker, Sumner, Texas;
In Territory VI (Zone A), Laura Lyon, Howell, Michigan;
*In Territory V (Zone A), Although technically “properly nominated and deemed” re-elected, Eric Beené has declined the directorship term which begins July 3, 2008. According to ApHC bylaws, the Board of Directors may make a termporary appointment of any directorship to be filled by appointing an ApHC member domiciled in the affected geographical zone, but a special election is required when the unexpired term of the vacancy exceeds one year.
The bylaws do not require a special election to be held immediately, therefore a temporary appointment could be made and remain in effect for the period of time between swearing in and the next regularly scheduled election. Of course, the appointed person may then run as a candidate for the unexpired term.

An artist of great renown, Orren Mixer was internationally recognized for his ability to paint the Western stock horse. The Arcadia, Oklahoma, artist has painted Appaloosa icons Chief of Four Mile, King Plaudit, and Straw Bug, as well as, Mexican actor Vincente Fernandez on a black blanketed Appaloosa stallion. After enlisting in the Navy, Orren was sent to Chicago to illustrate training manuals. It was there that he discovered the value of his paintings when his wife, Evelyn, took a few paintings to a local department store where two sold the very first night. In addition to painting, Orren bred Appaloosas, including Tom Mixer, a 1982 gelding who won $65,605.51 during his race career, including victories in the summer and Worldwide Futurities in 1984 and the Cricket Bars Maturity in 1985.
From the American Quarter Horse Journal, April 30, 2008 –
Mixer was born in Oklahoma City in 1920 to Florence Motter and Orren Marion Mixer Sr. After attending public schools, he graduated from Central High School and through the efforts of his high school art teacher, Grace Chadwick, he obtained a scholarship to attend the Kansas City Art Institute from 1938-40.
Mixer worked in graphic arts in New York, Oklahoma City, and Fort Worth, Texas, before moving to San Diego to work in an aircraft manufacturing plant. He returned to Fort Worth in 1943 and joined the US Navy. Stationed in Chicago, he was a visual aids graphic artist.
In his personal time, Mixer painted Western scenes, and his first sales came through a Chicago sporting goods store. Discharged from the service in 1946, he brought his wife, Evelyn Leonard, whom he’d married in 1941, back to Oklahoma, where he built a house and studio near Arcadia/Edmond.
Mixer became a well-known local Western artist during the 1950s and 1960s. Livestock, particularly horses, became his specialty, and his work graced the covers of Western Horseman, Quarter Horse Journal, Cattleman, and Oklahoma Today. In 1968, the American Quarter Horse Association commissioned Mixer to paint “the ideal American Quarter Horse,” and six other breed associations followed suit. He depicted the ideal Pinto, Paint, Palomino, Appaloosa, Buckskin, and Pony of the Americas.
Briefly retired during the 1980s, Mixer resumed his artistic productions in the mid-1990s, still working from a studio near Arcadia.
Mixer was inducted in the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1993 (and the Appaloosa Hall of Fame in 1998).

We’ve mentioned in previous posts some of the new ways to promote your spots and celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Appaloosa Horse Club. We want to let you know that folks in the Performance Department as well as the Marketing Department are able to help you with options and details for placing an order.
If you’re already in touch with someone in the Performance Department about show-related matters, you can also visit with them about advertising and promotion opportunities in conjunction with the 61st National Show. We’ve added streaming video advertising options and some other affordable and effective strategies such as space on the Jackson Equestrian Center concourse, advertising on the official show blog and in the daily Network publication. Of course class sponsorships and banners are also available. Give it some thought and give us a call.
We thought you’d like to know that some helpful additions have been made to the website collection of information about registering your Appaloosa. From the appaloosa.com home page, click on the “registration” button and then go to the “FAQ’s” (Frequently Asked Questions) area for more details about HYPP and DNA testing. The DNA tutorial features a step-by-step guide to collecting, handling and shipping samples.
In case you missed it, there is also information about the Performance Permit Program that can be found in the registration section or by clicking on the “show” button in the main menu.
Owners of Appaloosas registered with the ApHCC have a wonderful opportunity to dual-register their Appaloosas with the ApHC.
IT’S SIMPLE! No Stallion Breeding Reports, Breeder’s Certificates, or Transfers of Ownership necessary!
To receive an ApHC Certificate of Registration, simply submit your request along with a photocopy of the front and back of the ApHCC Certificate of Registration, four current photographs of your horse, clearly showing both sides, a complete front and rear view, and a $100 fee (US funds).
For an ApHCC Re-Registration form, please go to this link: http://www.appaloosa.com/pdfs/CanadianOpenWindowRE_REG.pdf, or call us at 208.882.5578 ext. 300
ApHC registration classification and eligibility are subject to ApHC rules and regulations.
Interested in brushing up your equine judging skills? Then gather your friends and head to Jackson, Miss. as the Appaloosa Youth Association (AYA), the official youth program of the Appaloosa Horse Club, is proud to host the Youth/Collegiate Horse Judging Contest at the 61st National Appaloosa Show & 2008 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show. This exciting event will be held Monday, June 30 at 8 a.m. in Barn 14 at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds.
The collegiate and youth divisions are open to teams and individuals. Youth teams with participants 18 and under are limited to four per team, and collegiate teams are limited to five per team.
Participants will judge four halter classes and four performance classes. Prizes will be awarded to the top ten individuals and the top four teams in both divisions for excellence in judging halter, performance, reasons and overall.
The fee for individuals is $25, and $75 for a team. Be sure to enter early as fees increase after June 1 to $35 for individuals and $100 for teams. Lunch will be provided by the ApHC for participants and the awards ceremony will take place later that afternoon. Entry forms must be received in office by June 13.
Entry forms can be found in the Appaloosa Journal or visit www.appaloosayouth.com
The ApHC has established July 1, 2008, as the start date for a one-year registration invitation to owners of horses registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada. During the invitation period, Appaloosas carrying ApHCC Certificates of Registration will be considered eligible for ApHC registration. The ApHC Board of Directors is using that time frame to explore further options for mutual benefit. Part of the process will be ongoing dialogue with ApHCC leadership.
Other recent discussions have focused on a proposal to automatically qualify Canadian National Champions for the ApHC World Show in the same year. The ApHC executive committee has expressed support for the idea and will likely offer a recommendation at the July Board of Directors meeting in Jackson, Mississippi. Winners from the European Championships and other international shows, as well as from the ApHC National Show, may also be included in the ultimate proposal.
Another group of ApHC directors is working on realignment of our point system for World Show qualification. Under the new structure, adjustments would be made each year to more appropriately reflect participation levels in each class, average number of points earned by qualifying horses and other factors.
The Territory 1 Zone B Workshop is April 26-27 in Missoula, MT. Contact Jan Phillips at 406-626-5331 by April 16 to make workshop reservations.
Room reservations also need to be made with Ruby’s Reserve Street Inn by April 16 to get the best rate. That number is 1-800-221-2057. Ask for the Appaloosa Horse Club Rate.
Registration for the meeting starts at noon on Saturday. The afternoon session includes updates and discussion of ApHC programs, followed by a buffet dinner. Saturday evening discussions will cover general horse industry issues and concerns. The Sunday brunch meeting will focus on idea sharing, recomendations for regional club and ApHC activities and programs.
There are some new options to promote your horses or business in conjunction with the National Appaloosa Show and World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show. In addition to the usual avenues such as farm flags, class and buckle sponsorships and Network advertising we can offer video and banner ads during the on-line broadcast of the shows, specific sponsorship of the National Show Blog, and hospitality areas on the Equestrian Center concourse.
On the Appaloosa.com home page there is a new button (Get Spotted Here) which takes you to the full description and rates for various advertising and sponsorship packages. You can also find the same form by clicking on the “Show” button from the regular menu and then clicking on “National Show” where you’ll find the pdf form to read and download.
