Appaloosa Museum needs a raffle horse!

One of the annual fund-raising activities of the Appaloosa Museum is a horse raffle. We are still in need of a critter for this year! The generous donor makes a tax-deductible gift and the museum generates some much needed revenue to be used for a variety of projects and activities. If you or anyone you know might be interested, here are some of the criteria:

We’d like an Appaloosa that is obviously Appaloosa in appearance; whatever the age, we’d really like to have a horse that is broke to lead, tie, haul, groom, etc. and free of know genetic issues. The donor would be responsible for a vet check for soundness and routine health requirements. If a riding horse, it should be suitable for a wide range of potential new owners.

The donated horse would not need to travel until the raffle drawing (usually October). Delivery arrangements will up to you and the new owner.

Anyone interested in helping the cause can reply here or contact the Appaloosa Museum directly. Crystal White is the museum director and would be delighted to visit with you about the process. Her phone # 208.882.5578 ext. 279 and her email: museum@appaloosa.com. Thanks!

Help celebrate the 65th National Show

We’d really like to see you and your horse(s) at the 65th National Championship Appaloosa Show and the 2012 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show July 9-21 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s a pretty cool milestone to celebrate the longest running national breed show. If you have not received a printed premium book, all the forms and information are available on the web site. Remember that the pre-entry deadline is May 16th and the stall reservation deadline is May 23drd.

In case you haven’t noticed the teaser ad in the Journal, we’ll be introducing NEW TROPHIES at the show. And we can’t neglect to mention the fact that this year would be a great time to get together with some pals, your regional club or other group to sponsor a buckle and/or a class (or two).

And, take note that the July issue of the Journal will also include the 2011 Appaloosa Yearbook! Special advertising packages and discounts are available — reservation deadline is May 25th.

Hope to see you in Tulsa!

Another addition to ApHC online resources

We have added a new listing to the web for our online users. We call it the FPD Pedigree. This new pedigree is very much like our recently added Color and Points pedigrees only it lists the FPD Eligibility status and percentages of the primary horse and all horses in its 3 generation pedigree.

The cost of this pedigree is $10. If a user selects a horse that does not contain any FPD information within its pedigree the web page display a blank pedigree and inform the user that no data exists for the selected horse. They will not be charged for the pedigree if no data is found.

The actually FPD Pedigree description seen online is as follows:
Lists the Registration Number, Foal Date, Sex, FPD Eligibility Status and FPD Percentage of the selected horse plus the Names, Registration Number, Foal Date, FPD Eligibility Status and FPD Percentage of all horses in its 3 Generation Pedigree.

New options for ApHC members

The membership page on the website www.appaloosa.com has been redesigned.

The changes include a new look, easier navigation and the addition of a new “benefits” page.

We have added a large number of new benefits for members including wireless center, term life insurance, Medicare supplement insurance, pet insurance, discounts on car rentals & hotels just to name a few.

We are working on a few more additions including LifeLock (identity protection, a group dental plan and discounts on Constant Contact services – these will be coming soon.

Go to www.appaloosa.com and click the “membership” tab on the left menu bar to get started!

Dr. John

Our beloved John D. Corpolongo, D.O. died this past weekend while on his way home from a trail ride. “Doc” has been a fixture on ApHC trail rides for many years and has a belt buckle to prove it. He’s participated in more than 100 of ours and probably hundreds of others. He’s most famous for being the official ride physician on the Chief Joseph Trail Ride. Besides being a skilled medical guy, Dr. John was a great character, sage and friend. We’ll have more information about services as they become available.

To say that Doc was a special person is a pretty weak statement. He was one of the best friends and supporters of the ApHC we can imagine and he will be greatly missed.

You can also read the bio from our Hall of Fame page on the website. He was inducted into the ApHC Hall in 2002 and the Trail Ride Hall of Fame in 1995.

Performance Permit Sale!!

The Appaloosa Club Board of Directors has approved a discount sale for Performance Permits to begin immediately March 13, 2012, and run through December 31, 2012. The sale fees are as follows:

Performance Permit Sale Fees

Foal date to 24th month foal date:
Appaloosa x Appaloosa…
member $150 non-member $215

Appaloosa x Approved Breed…
member $150 (save $100) non-member $215 (save $100)

25th month and thereafter:
Appaloosa x Appaloosa…
member $150 (save $150) non-member $215 (save $150)

Appaloosa x Approved Breed…
member $200 (save $300) non-member $265 (save $300)

The rationale is probably obvious that we’d like to provide an opportunity for owners of older non-permit horses to do some catching up at a reasonable price. Then, the goal is to get those horses out of the barn and into competition of all sorts where the rest of the world can see more good Appaloosas and their versatility.

Yearbook/Journal combination

2012 is bringing changes to our Yearbook format. This year, instead of a separate booklet, the 2011 Yearbook will be included in the July issue of the Appaloosa Journal! That’s right – As a member of the ApHC you will receive the 2011 Yearbook as part of your subscription to the Appaloosa Journal. Now every member of the ApHC will get to see your Youth, Open, Non‐Pro, Race and Trail accomplishments during the year, in color!

This will be a popular issue so buy an extra copy ($15) while supplies last!

Order your extra copies of the 2011 Yearbook/July issue of Appaloosa Journal online at http://www.appaloosa.com/ecdefault/Detail.aspx

New Hampshire Horseperson of the Year!

Karen Dodge from Pittsfield, NH was awarded the NHHC 2011 Horseperson of the Year award during a ceremony at the Farm & Forest Expo on Friday evening February 3, 2012. Karen, a life-long horsewoman, lives, works and owns Chinquapin Hill Farm, in Pittsfield, New Hampshire. The farm is a boarding, breeding and training facility where the manure is conscientiously composted for recycling on the beautiful flower gardens planted and tended by Karen herself. Extra compost is distributed to local landscapers and gardeners. Chinquapin Hill clients range in age from five to over sixty-five. Disciplines include, but are not limited to: driving, pleasure showing, ranch skills, recre¬ational riding, hunters, trail and dressage! As a result of this variety, Karen has versatile horses and happy clients from all over the country. A recreational rider or nationally recognized competitor both gain skills and confidence with Karen’s personal and special gentle “hands on” approach to learning.

Karen has always been an active rider and horse trainer in the Appaloosa Horse Club (APHC) and New Hampshire Quarter Horse Associations (NHQHA). She often volunteers her time with these Associations, hosting clinics at her farm and other venues. She is a long time NHQHA Platinum sponsor. Promoting the interest of youngsters interested in equines, is very special to Karen. Karen also gives of her time and effort to a wide range of other types of horse events in New Hampshire; breed and open shows, fairs, clinics and recreational rides. And she also strongly encourages her students and clients to volunteer at events and shows as a way of “giving back” too. She has for many years been a contributor of WLNH Children’s Auction. Even in these difficult economic times, Karen does her part to support the equine industry in New Hampshire.

Over the years, Karen has held numerous positions on Boards and Committees at the State and Regional level. She is an American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Professional Horseperson, and is involved in the show rules/regulations committee and monitors fair and humane treatment of horses at nationally sanctioned shows. Each year she volunteers her time, working with APHC and AQHA at the Massachusetts Equine Affair in November.

Karen works to maintain a good rapport with other industry professionals both locally and across the country. She encourages her students of all ages to “try everything”. She trains her horses to be versa¬tile; taking pleasure show horses to ride on the beach, go on a trail ride, compete at a dressage school¬ing show, and even participate in a cow-working clinic! She invites other instructors to her farm for special sessions and continues to take lessons herself, updating her own informational base.

With Karen horses come first. She is “there” for the horse that needs extra attention at whatever time the horse may need it. Karen is the one who will be up all night with a mare and her new foal or a sick horse. In sub zero temperatures she will be out in the barn adding an extra blanket or extra shav¬ings to the stalls. Often in mid-summer, Karen will drive at night to keep the horses cool while trav¬eling to a show. Karen is that selfless person “behind the scenes” for so many other people’s personal success stories. As clients progress with their interest and skills, she travels with them to regional, national and world shows, where she has coached many successful rides. Recently a senior client who had been off horses for a year was patiently encouraged to ride after hip replacement. Karen is the trainer that makes the un-rideable Mustang able to trail ride with its owner. She is the teacher that empowers a student too scared to get back on her horse after a serious leg injury, not only to ride again, but to show and win many high point awards. Karen’s upbeat “can do” attitude and patience motivates an over fifty “mom” to go from the sidelines to riding and winning AQHA All Around High Point Award in two years!

Karen lives the life and the passion of horses! Her selfless devotion during a lifetime of work and accomplishments are the undeniable reasons for her being chosen as the 2012 NHHC Horseperson of the Year!
(New Hampshire Horse Council media release)
Congratulations Karen. The Appaloosa Horse Club is proud of you!
