Major Tom Wins Speedhorse/Graham Farms Paint & Appaloosa Derby


Major Tom picked up where he left off last season by winning an important stakes race for the Paint and Appaloosa racing breeds with a dominating two-length score in the Grade 1, $46,200 Speedhorse/Graham Farms Paint & Appaloosa Derby.

Owned by Mary Hainline of Noble, Okla., the 3-year-old Appaloosa gelding sired by Red Storm Cat (QH) from Mr Eye Opener (QH) mare Eyesa Knockout did not disappoint his connections or his backers. The heavy 4-5 wagering favorite rolled home to a comfortable two-length triumph. Trained by Eddie Willis and ridden by Jimmy Brooks, Major Tom covered the 350 yards in :17.289 seconds.

“When he left like he did, I knew it was over,” Brooks said. “I never even had to uncock the whip on him.”The victory was the sixth win of seven lifetime races for Major Tom with his derby earnings of $17,556 pushed his career earnings to $166,831. The gelding was bred in Oklahoma by Gary Vaughan.

Major Tom paid $3.60 to win, $3 to place and $2.40 to show. Imflashinthechicks was second and paid $3.40 to place and $3 to show. Turbulence was third and paid $4.20 to show. Completing the field were Situation, Drc Big Red, Ww Diamond Lake, Ww First Baby, One Last Fling, Texies Little Corona, Tiz My Country, Sunset Success and Poker Lil.
