Show site selection process

The ApHC has received and evaluated proposals over a period of months from various horse show facilities. Based upon the findings, the ApHC Board of Directors has authorized negotiations for specific dates and terms with the City of Fort Worth, Texas and the Will Rogers Equestrian Center as the potential site for the National Appaloosa Show and Youth World Championship Show beginning in 2013. There are several factors to be addressed as part of the negotiations including the window of available dates to start the show which currently ranges from June 12th – 24th. There may also be available dates later in the calendar year and ApHC is exploring a number of possibilities.

We know that dates for the youth show are of particular importance, especially in those areas where school terms extend well into June and where mandatory testing occurs in mid to late June. It is the goal of the ApHC to accommodate our exhibitors as much as possible while making the best use of member equity and working to sustain the Club and its programs.

It is incumbent upon the ApHC to review all appropriate options before the current two-year contract in Tulsa expires. The costs of putting on a major show are significant and the countless variables translate to serious financial risk for an organization of any size. Depending on final negotiations, the Fort Worth location offers a number of financial incentives, savings opportunities and other benefits that make it worthwhile from the business perspective of the Appaloosa Horse Club.

Without divulging the details of the confidential financial information related to proposals from various sites, understand that any final package being negotiated will have a sizeable positive impact on the ApHC’s financial outlook and may also allow us the opportunity to pass along savings and earning potential to show participants.

While acknowledging the positive experience of ApHC exhibitors at the 2011 show at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma, whatever the final location, every effort will be made to minimize conflicts with the schedule and to conduct an exceptional show that is enjoyable and user-friendly for exhibitors. We believe most members understand that the ApHC board and staff are ultimately tasked with continuing our stewardship over the Appaloosa horse and upholding our commitment of service to our members. In order to accomplish both, we must secure our organization’s fiscal health. To that end, we are working to ensure that the overall package is good for the long term viability of our premier events and the organization as a whole.

Appaloosa Journal for Soldiers

The recent Veterans Day “holiday” reminded me that the Appaloosa Journal has a neat new program for our overseas warriors.

If you have a family member or friend serving abroad in our Armed Forces who is an Appaloosa enthusiast and would appreciate a special complimentary subscription to AJ, sign them up!

AJ for Soldiers subscriptions are free to valid APO addresses, last for six months at a time and are renewable for the length of overseas deployment.

In response to members who have family serving overseas who grew up with Appaloosas and miss being around beloved spots, we are happy and honored to offer this new program. Give the gift of free Journals to a horse-loving soldier—all you have to do is sign a soldier up by visiting the AJ website (click on the “magazine” tab). The soldier will receive a current 6-month subscription which can be renewed.

Pfizer Animal Health opens equine research center

Source: Pfizer Animal Health news release
Pfizer Animal Health affirmed its commitment to innovation in equine health with the opening today of the Pfizer Animal Health Equine Research Center in Richland, Mich.

The center, the culmination of a $7 million investment, expands Pfizer Animal Health’s global research and development network headquarters in Kalamazoo, Mich., and will serve as the worldwide hub for research and development of equine vaccines and novel therapeutics.

“The dedication of the Equine Research Center builds on the $75 million investment in the renovation and expansion of Pfizer’s veterinary medicine R&D headquarters in Kalamazoo completed in 2009,” said Dr. Cathy Knupp, Vice President, Veterinary Medicine Research and Development, Pfizer Animal Health.

“The Center will support the work of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists committed to providing horse owners and the veterinarians who support them with truly innovative, best-in-class health solutions.”

The Center adds 24,000 square feet of research laboratory space as well as paddock and pasture facilities. It will serve as the U.S. equine research center of excellence for a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and specialists.

“Horses, like humans, are vulnerable to new outbreaks of prevalent illnesses such as equine influenza virus and Streptococcus equi as well as to emerging diseases such as Hendra virus,” said Dr. Paul Lunn, Ph.D., MRCVS, Dip. ACVIM, Professor and Head, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University. “The Pfizer Equine Research Center will help answer the urgent imperative for much needed innovation to help horses live longer, healthier lives.”

According to Dr. Mahesh Kumar, executive director, Global Biologics Research, who will lead the vaccine development program at the site, Pfizer and Wyeth/Fort Dodge Animal Health set the standard for first-in-class equine vaccines such as the West Nile Innovator vaccine and Fluvac Innovator, the first vaccine against equine influenza virus. “The Center and its scientific team will serve as the engine for equine research, speeding the development of a next generation of equine vaccines and therapeutics,” he said.

Pfizer Animal Health invests more in research development – greater than $300 million annually – than any other animal health company.

The veterinary medicine R&D facilities in Kalamazoo, which include the research farm in Richland, serve as U.S. and worldwide headquarters for Pfizer Animal Health’s global R&D network of 15 sites across four continents. These include R&D centers in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Spain, Belgium, France, India, China, and Australia. Pfizer employs more than 800 veterinary R&D scientists and specialists worldwide.

Color Breed Congress

Going on through Sunday Nov 6th in Tulsa, the Color Breed Congress includes competition for Pinto, Appaloosa, Buckskin, POA and Palomino horses. This is the first year for an approved ApHC show to be included at the Congress. It’s a four-judge ApHC show. The Pinto Association is the presenting organization. You can find more details at www.colorbreedcongress.com. The logo shown here is being featured on award jackets and seems to be very popular. The new four-sided video screen in the photo is new to the Ford Truck Arena.

Some of us believe the concept of a multi-breed show is a good one. Horse folks getting acquainted, vendors dealing with customers from several segments and sponsors getting their names in front of a cross section of industry participants seem to make sense.
