If you like variety in your horse activities, Friday at the World Championship Appaloosa Show will probably be right up your proverbial alley. The revised schedule is posted on the World Show page, but here’s a sample: showmanship, pleasure driving, stump race, hunt seat equitation, rope race and Western pleasure. Tonight’s performance features the Toys for Tots campaign, a parade of the day’s halter champions and a presentation of contenders for the Nutrena Iron Horse Award.
Thanks again to our exhibitors for their patience as the show schedule was adjusted to fit four days of classes into three. Part of the process was to compare entry lists for each class in an effort to minimize class conflicts.
One more reminder for every ApHC member with an interest in what goes on in the show ring. Any time is a good time to say thanks, but especially when you’re doing business with our trade show vendors, sponsors, partners and friends, let them know that we appreciate their support and that we truly value them as a visible part of the Appaloosa community.
Will Rogers Memorial Center media release:
Test results on the horse with symptoms that prompted the voluntary quarantine of entries in the Appaloosa Horse Club World Championships at the Fort Worth Will Rogers Memorial Center have come back negative.
Because tests show no health risk to other horses or participants, the World Championships will continue through its scheduled conclusion on Saturday. Show officials are working on a revised schedule to accommodate the activities that were postponed.
“Obviously, we are delighted with the results,” said Steve Taylor, Chief Executive Officer with the Appaloosa Horse Club. “We are especially proud of the cooperation between the show officials, the Will Rogers Memorial Center representatives and the others involved in the decision to implement the precautionary measures.”
Taylor also said he was grateful for the patience and cooperation of the exhibitors who supported the precautionary measures.
Voluntary quarantine protocols were initiated Tuesday night after the horse displayed what appeared to be neurological symptoms. WRMC staff immediately began the precautionary quarantine protocols, including isolation of the horse in question and two other horses that arrived at the show in the same trailer, as well as regular sanitization of the barn and implements.
Kevin Kemp, assistant facilities and public events director, said the WRMC staff is prepared for these types of situations and is ready to respond.
“The good news for everyone involved is the tests came back negative,” Kemp said. “In cases like this, we have a number of protocols in place that help us ensure the health and safety of the show participants. These are part of our efforts to be prepared and provide the best and most complete service possible to the show participants who come to our facility. Our staff acted immediately, and because of that we were able to reduce the risk.”
We received word from the diagnostic lab at UC-Davis that the “suspect” horse at the World Show in Fort Worth is not infected with Equine Herpesvirus 1. The negative test result means that the World Sale goes tonight at 9:00 and a consolidated class schedule will start tomorrow (Thursday) morning.
Thanks to our exhibitors for their patience and cooperation. A huge thanks to the official show veterinarians, the Will Rogers staff, Fort Worth police and everyone who helped make the coordinated risk management effort a good example for others.
On with the show!
Voluntary quarantine protocols were initiated after a horse at the Appaloosa Horse Club World Championship at the Fort Worth Will Rogers Memorial Center (WRMC) displayed what appeared to be neurological symptoms.
These steps are only voluntary and precautionary, pending test results and a diagnosis.
There is no evidence of any spread of the symptoms found in the original horse, but as part of the precautionary measures, the barns and implements have been sanitized and the process will continue every two hours throughout the day until the voluntary quarantine is lifted.
The voluntary quarantine is for animals only, and officials have asked that no animals leave or enter the facility.
The ApHC classes have been canceled for today only. A decision on the remaining events will be made pending results of the tests. All other events will occur as scheduled, including the Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon.
Kevin Kemp, assistant facilities and public events director, said the WRMC staff is prepared for these types of situations and is ready to respond.
“The Will Rogers staff and show organizers are committed to doing everything we can to maintain a healthy and safe environment,” said Kemp. “We are working very closely with show management and are in communication with and are following all recommendations of the show veterinarian and the Texas Animal Health Commission.”
Steve Taylor, Chief Executive Officer with the Appaloosa Horse Club said he is grateful for the cooperation between his staff and WRMC.
“We appreciate everyone working together on this and for the hard work everyone has put into mitigating any effects from this situation,” he said. “Everything that can be done is being done.”

Attention online bidders and others interested in the World Sale. The start time has been moved to 9:00 p.m. Central tonight. The location is in the West Sales Arena at Will Rogers Memorial Center, Fort Worth.
The Appaloosa Horse Club has taken the precaution of temporarily suspending competition scheduled for Wednesday October 26th at the World Championship Appaloosa Show in Fort Worth pending official test results for a horse exhibiting neurological symptoms. With the advice of on-site veterinarians, the Will Rogers Equestrian Center has implemented a voluntary quarantine for animals.
Additional biosecurity measures have been implemented and exhibitors are cooperating in an effort to mitigate any potential risks of infection. Laboratory results are expected by later in the day on Wednesday.
ApHC and the Will Rogers staff are in communication with and following all recommendations of the Texas Animal Health Commission. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
Activity in the Watt arena today featured ApHC cutting classes and special events conducted by the Appaloosa Cutting Horse Association, such as the first round of the futurity. In the Justin, we had some really tough competition in non-pro showmanship and horsemanship as well as the open stake race, 35+ non-pro western pleasure, non-pro saddle seat and senior western pleasure. Perfect weather in Texas today and quite a number of new arrivals on the spectator side of the equation. Attention is apparently being subdivided for at least a few folks because of some kind of sporting events having to do with Rangers and Cowboys.
It’s one of the variety days at the 2011 Appaloosa World Show in Fort Worth. Non-pro’s are on the scene to compete today in horsemanship, stake race, Western pleasure, saddle seat, western riding and reining. Finished the roping last night with some entertaining and skillful cowboys and cowgirls getting the job done.
Be sure to check in at www.liveauctions.tv and get yourself set up as a viewer/bidder for the Appaloosa World Sale Wednesday evening. You’ll be able to watch the event in real time and submit bids for the prospect or performer of your choice.
In the meantime, of course, you can watch the World Show via webcast from the appaloosa.com site.

Dateline Fort Worth, Texas — Most of the exhibitors, vendors, staff, crew and the equine athletes have arrived for the 2011 World Show at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. At first glance, visitors will notice several things that are new: new stalls in several barns, a new additional warmup pen (photo), new round pens on the South side, a new cafe, fresh paint, etc. The most obvious attention-getter is the construction zone. By this time next year, we’ll have access to a new building with 700+ stalls on the lower level and two 100′X200′ covered warmup pens on the upper level. Other projects are planned and the facility folks are pretty enthused about catering to the horse crowd.
The class schedule starts tomorrow morning with trail in the Watt and roping in the Justin. Web viewing will be available, so tune in for your favorites.
We’ve been advised that site maintenance for the Votenet eballot process will be conducted Sunday, October 16, 2011 from 1am to 8 AM Eastern Standard Time. A service interruption message will be displayed to inform visitors of this and request them to check back later.
They may complete the process sooner, but wanted you to know in case you’re an early bird or a really late night bird. In any case, voters should attempt voting after 8 AM Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, October 16, 2011.
The updated Pattern Book for the 2011 World Show is posted on the website. Move-in day is Wednesday the 19th. Show begins Friday Oct. 21st.

During the week we’ll be having special remembrances for George Hatley, Karen Grimm, Ben Johnson and Bill Cass. And, don’t forget to bring an unwrapped toy (or cash donation) to Friday night’s performance (28th) for Toys For Tots. That’s Freestyle Reining night — always a fun evening.
And, hey, when you see a trade show exhibitor, ApHC partner, show sponsor, class/buckle sponsor, please be sure to let them know how much we appreciate their support.
