Idaho news (your state horse council probably needs you)

While returning from the Idaho Horse Council annual meeting, I couldn’t resist a photo of this view along the highway above Whitebird Canyon and historic battlefield. Doesn’t have a lot to do with the meeting, but hey, it represents part of the mystique of the horse industry and our heritage.

Council members had a good discussion about topics relevant to all parts of the country…health regulations, animal identification, noxious weeds, trail preservation, ways to reinvigorate the racing segment, competition for time and dollars, abandoned horses, animal welfare, slaughter, etc. I mention all this as an excuse to encourage all ApHC members to consider joining, or at least getting acquainted with, their respective state horse councils. The “power of association” really works and our community can’t afford to let others make policies and laws without us.

The Appaloosa Journal is now your complete lifestyle source

We are proud to announce that in 2011, we’ll be launching a new year and a new look to the Appaloosa Journal with a series of lifestyle pages featuring Christi Proctor, owner of Moon Rein Interiors, and Shana Gibson of Modern Cowgirl.

Christi, a former designer on “Trading Spaces” and a non-pro reiner under the guidance of Terry Thompson, will show you how to decorate for an upscale western lifestyle.

Shana is a lifetime horse enthusiast and owner of Modern Cowgirl. Her role will be to help you “find your best style.”

Vote — and vote often — for an Appaloosa in Merial’s spokesperson contest

Dear Appaloosa Friends,

I am a veterinarian who competes my wonderful rescue leopard App mare in eventing. As an indirect result of my competing in the American Eventing Championships I have been selected as a finalist in Merial’s Ulcergard spokesperson contest. If I win, my mare’s picture may be used in many venues in their promotions of this widely used product. She is a very attractively colored horse who brings many comments where ever we go. She is a lovely example of the breed.

The winner of this contest is determined by popular vote on line at stayonguard.ulcergard.com. One can vote daily until Friday the 19th at 5 PM. Would you be willing to disseminate this information to your ApHC friends in order to help us win this? If you go to the website you will see a photo of us at the AECs. Thanks, KSK

Appaloosa Project update

From researcher Sheila Archer:

Hi Everyone!

I’ve just posted a new article on our website for everyone who is interested in learning more about what the recent LP research means. It was written by Dr. Bellone and I, and it explains what the SNP discovery means, what is possible now because of it (eg. DNA testing for LP), how such a test would work, and where we’re going from here with our LP research.

Rather than putting it up as a “Hot Topic”, the article is accessible directly from the main menu on our website. This means all visitors, whether they have subscriptions or not, can read it. The name of the link is “LP Discovery!”, and it’s the bottom one in the list of links.

To access the article directly, you can also click on: LP Discovery!

We hope you find this information useful and interesting! Please feel free to post questions to the list after you’ve had a chance to read it!

World Show

Just a reminder to check the Appaloosa Journal site for daily news updates and the Network.

Unofficial tally shows that we had 864 horses competing in Fort Worth. There were at least 2,386 class entries. These are very good numbers — all things considered.

High-selling horse in the World Sale was from the yearling incentive portion of the sale. Miss Ice Te sold for $25,000. We’ll have a sale summary this week, but the average prices held up and most comments from the consignors and buyers reflected positive thoughts about the sale crew and overall outcome.

Mostly, we want to say “thank you” to all our exhibitors who spent the time, money and effort to be involved in the 2010 World Championship Appaloosa Show!
