Roland and Mary Tom Haun stopped by the International Equine Festival trade show for a quick visit. They had been to the Kentucky Horse Park to take in the World Games scenery as well. The Hauns are hosting this year’s Sheltowee Trail Ride starting this weekend at Red Hill Horse Camp near Livingston, Kentucky.
News from the WEG competition includes a rare feat for U.S. Dressage. Steffen Peters earned a bronze medal in Wednesday’s grand prix special — the individual competition. This gave the U.S. its first-ever WEG individual medal in dressage. He was riding the rock star horse named Ravel. According to media reports, the last time anyone from the U.S. won an individual dressage medal was 1932 at the Los Angeles Olympics!
Finals in the individual reining competition are today and the freestyle exhibition is this evening.

The National Championship & Youth World Championship Shows will be held in Tulsa, OK in 2011 & 2012. The Tulsa Convention & Visitors Bureau has offered a financial incentive package to assist ApHC with costs associated with producing the show in this venue. In order to sustain their level of financial support, we must certify the number of hotel rooms used in the City during the show. To do this, we have established a Housing Bureau that will be staffed by the Tulsa CVB to help show attendees select hotels and book rooms during the show. This way we can track hotel room usage in order to sustain the financial support offered by the Tulsa CVB.
Tulsa CVB employees will be on hand during the World Show to assist you with room reservations for the 2011 National Show. In addition, you can find information on the ApHC Web site that will direct you to the Housing Bureau site where you can book your rooms on-line from a variety of properties, offering a wide range of amenities and price points.
Incentive money offered by the host city not only helps ApHC pay show-related costs, but helps us to avoid passing some of those costs on to exhibitors. Please assist us in maintaining that financial support by booking rooms through the Housing Bureau.
Please help us identify the hotel properties you are most interested in so that we can negotiate the best possible rates for your stay. Staying at contracted hotels also ensures Tulsa’s continued financial support of the show. This link will take you to our short National Show Hotel Survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L9PV7K7 .
We appreciate your support!

Thought we’d give a nod to major sponsor Alltech for the first post from the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games. This scene is just part of what visitors can view in the Alltech Village. Team competition in Reining was on the agenda for today, along with team and individual Endurance events. The Equine Village, trade show, Alltech Village and the downtown International Equestrian Festival were all gathering steam.

The ApHC Board of Directors yesterday approved a recommendation from the Breeders Committee that deals with the question of dual-registered horses and whether they can be considered an “approved outcross” by the ApHC. A second vote will be taken as early as December. Part of the reason for a board vote was to make sure ApHC members have an opportunity to consider and respond to this particular question. Directors want to hear from you. Proposed changes to the rule language are in italics below:

Still working on my photo album contributions from the Battle of the Breeds in Calgary. I’m sure that I forgot to mention that the Appaloosa team finished 7th overall (out of 12 teams) after a good 4th place showing in the timed trail event. The group was only three points behind the tie for 5th and 6th in the totals, so it was a competitive deal all the way through.
Thanks to the team, the support crew and to all the fans!
We received this note from Mary Bengel in Oregon. The details are pretty amazing.
Dear Appaloosa Horse Club,
Please check out our friend and horse trainer’s Facebook page and blog. Plus you can hear her being interviewed on The Horse Radio Network’s Stable Scoop show (episodes 94-107). Kathleen Dodd left Oregon mid-May to ride her two Appy’s across the USA to the East Coast….alone with no support or follow vehicle. She is currently in Nebraska. Her Appy’s are mother and daughter. Mystic, the mama, is Kathleen’s jumper champion. And Delightful, the daughter, is as pretty as she can be at only 4 years old. These mares have seen a lot over the last 4 states. They are now snake proof, wild horse proof, firework proof, semi-truck proof, jack rabbit proof, and train proof.
Kathleen and the mares are traveling on little to no money. Care packages are being sent as well as cash. We are looking for sponsorship to help cover the cost of hay, horseshoes, and the cell phone bill that is used for safety and to monitor and navigate their trip. I have added your facebook page to Kathleen’s Wild Ride as one of “our favorites” Please check it out at: Kathleen’s Wild Ride [On facebook] The Horse Radio Network’s Stable Scoop Show [episode 94-107] They also have a facebook page. And Kathleen blogs when she can: youmightthinkthisiscrazy.blogspot.com

This recent photo proves that he’s growing and looking good.
It’s the 35th anniversary of championship equine sport at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta. It’s the 21st edition of the Battle of the Breeds. This year’s battle includes 12 breed teams competing for prize money, fan approval and a bit of bragging rights.
Pictured here is Kaylee McLachlin riding Amigo TRT in the Jeopardy Jumping — one of five events in the Battle of the Breeds. This duo performed well, scoring 460 points which included the 100-point bonus jump. Denice Jones, riding Shady’s Leo Dexter, also competed today in the jumping and compulsory skills (in Dexter’s case, driving).
Tomorrow’s agenda includes precision driving and barrels. Should be fun to watch. Each of the five components of the battle features substantial cash and attracts a good crowd of loyal fans. Stay tuned. Team Appaloosa looks to be competitive. Thanks to the Alberta regional club for coordinating an exhibit booth at Equine Expo. Even if things don’t warm up and dry up, it will be another super PR opportunity.
