Mail truck fire may have involved DNA lab samples

On Wednesday April 7th, a U.S. Postal Service contracted tractor-trailer in the Albany, NY district was involved in an accident and the vehicle was engulfed in flames. DNA samples mailed by our members/clients to Maxxam Labs in Ontario between April 1 -6 may have been destroyed. Horse owners should contact the ApHC Registration Department if they believe they mailed their samples during that time, have concerns, and have not received test results from the ApHC.

National Show judging

The ApHC Board of Directors has adjusted its earlier decision about reducing the number of judges for the upcoming National Show and Youth World in Jackson. Because of feedback from exhibitors and an offer of financial support from an anonymous donor, the board found some middle ground and authorized the use of four judges in each class. Final placings will be calculated after removing the low score for each entry.

Network goes digital

The National Network will no longer be distributed in print form at the show grounds. It has been changed to a digital publication accessible on the National Show page of the website.

Class sheets including judges placings will continue to be available at the ApHC Information Booth on the concourse of the Kirk Fordice Equestrian Center.

Annual Membership Meeting

In case you are planning to be in the Jackson neighborhood for the 2010 ApHC Membership Meeting, the date was listed incorrectly in the June magazine. The date is actually THURSDAY JUNE 24TH, 1:00 PM. in the Trade Mart Building at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds.

Three-judge system at National Show…and beyond

The ApHC will use three judges in the ring, rather than five, at next month’s National Show and Youth World Championship in Jackson.

The ApHC Board of Directors met yesterday (May 20th) to discuss a variety of cost-cutting strategies, many of which have already been implemented, to offset revenue reductions relating to the show and to general economic conditions. Specifically, pre-entries are down approximately 10 percent from last year’s show, sponsorship dollars are lower and anticipated support from state agencies in Mississippi has been pressured by budget cuts.

In addition to reducing the number of judges, ring stewards and staff, we have negotiated concessions in almost all other contracts and service agreements.

As pointed out by President Chuck McWhirter, there is a firm commitment to staging a prestigious National Show, but there is also a duty to protect member equity and the overall financial stability of the Club.

The Board also determined that a three-judge system will be employed at the 2010 World Show and future ApHC-sponsored shows – “until further notice.”

The impact on exhibitors should be minimal, since the existing scoring system using five judges eliminates the high and low scores in each class, with placings determined by a composite three-judge total.

Wilma Tate

We received this personal memorial for Wilma Tate from board member Dennis Dean:

I thought I’d pass along a note that Wilma Tate passed away over the weekend. I don’t have the exact date. Wilma is in the Cow Girl Hall of Fame, known for her Roman riding, and was a lifetime Appaloosa supporter beginning in the early 1960’s. She owned her own training facility where she trained students to ride Appaloosa horses. Together, she and her youth team dominated Appaloosa shows in Southern California, attended National Shows and produced a number of Champions.

One of her ApHC World Champions during the 1960′s era was Reboso Tildo, who was a hunter and jumper. Wilma was part of the group that worked with Bob Hawkins (Hall of Famer) that founded the Southern California Appaloosa Club in 1963. She served as President of So. Cal Appaloosa Club in 1964, and served on the Board of Calizona Appaloosa Club in the 1980’s. She was the principle designer of the Tenton Ranch in Lakeview, California, standing the Appaloosa stallion Cojo Bueno, where they specialized in reining, pleasure and halter. Later this facility became the Lakeview Thoroughbred Farm which is still in operation. Wilma Tate was most recently remembered for her highly successful monthly Open show circuit where her Appaloosa horses and students competed well against all comers in the Riverside area. This circuit continues today after being passed along to one of her protégés.

Wilma was well respected and looked to for equine expertise. Health issues forced her to be bed ridden for the recent past. Until then, she regularly hauled and sold horses between Oklahoma and California.

Wilma was a pioneer and an industry mainstay for many decades. She will be missed. By the way, a mare name after her, Sweet Wilma T, foaled this morning, having a colored filly.

Regards,
Dennis
