Office note: Breeders Trust checks are in the mail (really). Total payout for 2009 is slightly more than $90,000. Read more about the program on the appaloosa.com site.
One hundred percent of all funds received from stallion enrollments and foal nominations is maintained in an interest bearing account. Five percent is retained by the ApHC to help defray the cost of administering the Trust. The remaining 95% is divided into 5 equal parts. The five age categories receiving these funds are Yearlings, Two-Year-Olds, Three-Year-Olds, Four-Year-Olds and Five-Year-Olds. The total amount of funds in each age category is divided by the total number of show points earned by enrolled horses in that age category. This determines the cash value of each point.

My name is Dr. Shana Gillette and I am a faculty member in the Clinical Sciences Department of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University. I am the principal investigator on a study of equine infectious disease issues. Dr. Josie Traub-Dargatz, CSU Professor of equine medicine, is the co-principal investigator. As part of the study, we are conducting an online survey on infectious diseases of concern to the equine industry.
We hope you will be willing to alert your members to the importance of our online survey. It is important that we receive broad participation from all members of the equine industry for a fair representation of concerns regarding equine infectious disease issues.
We hope you and your association members can take a few minutes to fill out our online survey. It is available at the following link:
https://academictrial.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9sP6LHag1t5xthW&SVID=Prod
Completion of this survey is voluntary. People who decide to participate may withdraw consent and stop participation at any time without penalty. The survey will not ask for a name or email address, to ensure that all answers remain anonymous. Colorado State University will securely collect and store the data. The collected data will then be validated and analyzed and results will be published on the website for the Animal Population Health Institute at: http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/APHI
While there are no direct benefits to be gained to individuals who participate in this survey, we hope the equine industry will gain more knowledge on the primary equine diseases of concern. There are no known risks to participation.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Shana Gillette at (970) 297-5117 (shana.gillette@colostate.edu). If you have any questions about your rights as a volunteer in this research, contact Janell Barker, Human Research Administrator, at 970-491-1655.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shana Gillette, Assistant Professor

ApHC has updated Web site access to include novice eligibility information for those members who haven’t yet renewed their membership for 2010. Since so many members purchase membership at the first show they attend, it’s important for show organizers and members alike to have access to accurate information on the novice status of those exhibitors. Visit www.appaloosa.com, click on “Show” and then click on “Verify Your Membership and Novice Eligibility Here”. Type in a membership number and click “Submit” for the latest information. This is a great tool for regional shows to use when checking in horses and riders at the show office. Instant access to membership and novice information is just a few clicks away.
If you’ve had any thoughts at all about participating in the Apache Land Trail Ride next month, it’s time to make your move. Check out the details on the appaloosa.com Web site and call Kevin Pullen at ApHC extension #221.
APACHE LAND: April 25 – May 1 CORONADO NATIONAL FOREST, ARIZONA
The Apache Land is a base camp ride, departing from and returning to the camp every day. This year the Apache Land ride will take place in the beautiful Santa Rita Mountains and foothills which are part of the multi-mountain range of the Coronado National Forest, a federally protected wonderland. Apache Indians roamed and thrived in these mountains for centuries, fiercely protecting them and driving out invaders until the arrival of white settlers with their military protection. Rugged peaks tower to nearly 10,000 feet, with jagged cliffs, plunging canyons and broad grassy basins containing numerous springs and pools which support a wide variety of large game and their predators.

Yesterday, the American Horse Council released its 2009 Report on Equestrian Access on Federal Land. The 2009 report is intended to provide a brief overview of the responses the AHC received from equestrians to its ongoing access survey in 2009. The report can be viewed and downloaded on the AHC’s website at: https://www.horsecouncil.org//images/2009 ReportEqAccessFedLand.pdf.
In July of 2009 the American Horse Council launched an effort to collect information regarding equestrian access issues on federal lands. This effort was prompted by a growing concern among recreational riders around the country that they were seeing a reduction in the number of trails and trail heads open to equestrians on federal land.
The center piece of this effort has been an AHC online form riders can use to report their personal experiences regarding trails on federal lands that have been closed to them or other access issues. This online form is located at https://www.horsecouncil.org/survey.php.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans use horses and pack stock to enjoy America’s great outdoors each year. However, it is an experience that cannot be enjoyed without access to public land, trail systems, and trailheads.
“The AHC will use this report to illustrate some of the challenges facing recreational riders,” said AHC President Jay Hickey.” “Our federal land mangers work hard to provide recreational opportunities and we need to make sure they have adequate resource and equestrians need to work with them at all levels. However, sometimes there are issues and conflicts that need to documented and brought to there attention. This report is just one part of our efforts to ensure equestrian continue to have recreational opportunities on federal land.
Attn Appaloosa Folks:
Ken Goodison, long time member of the ApHC, and Arizona Appaloosa Assn, passed away yesterday (Friday) after a valiant battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, the family is in need of donations to help cover the huge medical expenses they have incurred. Please contact me for more info, I’ll be happy to provide you with Donna’s address.
Husband to Donna Goodison, Ken was a familiar face at our shows. He was our Gate Man Extraodinaire and will be sorely missed by all of us. Please keep Donna in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
The AAA will be meeting to discuss holding a fundraiser/raffle with proceeds being donated to the family. We will update everyone once those arrangements are in place.

The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) is pleased to announce its collaboration with Star H Equine Insurance to create the ApHC Regional Club Liability Insurance Program.
This new liability insurance program for ApHC Regional Clubs provides spectator liability coverage for all a regional club’s equine events on an annual basis, with limits of $1 million per Claim with $2 million Aggregate. The Aggregate limit means that a regional club could have two $1 million Claims made against it in any one policy year and still be covered.
The coverage protects your regional club, its officers, board members, directors and volunteers in the event that an individual club member or volunteer should be individually named in a claim or lawsuit. Other individuals or entities, such as the facility owner and the ApHC, can be added as Additional Insured at no additional premium charge. In the event of a lawsuit, the policy pays all legal costs in addition to the $1 million limit per claim.
The annual minimum premium for this coverage is $400, which covers up to five (5) equine event days. Activities such as board and membership meetings, annual banquets and trade booths will be covered at no additional costs. For regional clubs located in Florida, the minimum premium is $500, but will give you up to seven (7) equine event days.

May 1 & 2, 2010, Long Creek ApHC will be joining forces with the Illinois Appaloosa Association in Gifford, IL, to co-sponsor a four judged, dual-approved point show. There will be added money and grand prizes awarded in the Reining Derby Saturday evening. The show will feature jumping classes, cattle classes and AGHA (Appaloosa Games Horse Assoc.) classes. Judges will be Mary Ann Cash, Andrea Koehn, Duke Neff and Ron Rhoades. Visit www.freewebs.com/longcreekaphc/ for full details. See you at the Derby!
I had the good fortune to spend some time this past weekend in Tampa for the inaugural event of the “Reining Classic.” Thanks to host and show organizer Frank Marley for a warm welcome and for all the efforts of his support team. Actually, it wasn’t so warm weather-wise, but the quality of the reining was outstanding. The sport is certainly attracting more attention these days and part of Frank’s goal is always to promote Appaloosa horses along with the discipline. Folks from Inside Reining television, the NRHA magazine and Quarter Horse News were there to cover all the action. Instead of the usual trophies, winners received a Seminole Hard Rock guitar. Good food, good fun, entertainment, a trade show and lots of tough reining competition made for a really good start for what Frank intends to make an annual event.
We’ll follow up with further details (or where to find them), and you can visit the photo album link for more of my weak attempts at photography.
