Reed Humpherys

Reed Clark Humpherys, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Wayan, Idaho on April 26, 2009. Born in Thayne, on July 11, 1924, Reed was the oldest of eight children of Willard Davis Humpherys and Rhoda Clark, both first generation descendants of Mormon pioneers who settled the Utah, Idaho and Wyoming areas. Reed’s early years were spent on Star Valley dairy farms, where he very effectively learned about cattle and horses, which formed the basis of his livelihood in the years to come.

Reed married Doris Rudrud of Grand Forks, N.D. on Nov. 27, 1943 in Galesburg, Ill., and later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on April 24, 1945. After serving as a flight instructor until the end of WWII, he returned to ranch life with his dad in Lava Hot Springs and then in Grays Lake during the spring of 1948. At the age of 26, he assumed the responsibility of running the ranch upon the death of his dad. He lived on and operated the JH-Bar ranch for 61 years, until his death on April 26, 2009.

He raised palomino, appaloosa and paint horses, served for nine years on the Appaloosa Horse Club’s Board of Directors and three years as Chairman of the Judges Committee. He judged Paints for 30 years and was the oldest active judge until his retirement last year. Reed served on the Caribou County Fair Board for ten years. In April 2006 Reed was inducted into the Idaho Horseman Hall of Fame. He served in several leadership positions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints, including Grays Lake Ward Bishop and Stake High Councilor. As a philanthropist, he was president of an international humanitarian organization supporting schools in Central and South America and Europe.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 at noon at the Soda Springs LDS Stake Center. A viewing will be held at the Sims Funeral Home on Thursday April 30 from 6-8 p.m., and on Friday morning at the Stake Center from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs, Idaho.

62nd National and 2009 Youth World Appaloosa Horse Show Class Specials

A non-pro or a youth exhibitor may enter 9 classes at regular price and enter a 10th class for FREE! This option is available for PRE-ENTRIES ONLY! This option is available to non-pro and youth exhibitors regardless of the number of different horses they exhibit and is based solely on the number of classes in which that non-pro or that youth exhibitor enters.

Entries for multiple horses MUST BE RECEIVED TOGETHER in order to credit the exhibitor for the free class. Once entries have been received, classes can NOT be substituted, scratched, added or changed in order to qualify for a class. After the pre-entry deadline, regular post-entry processes and fees apply to any changes or added classes. Equipment, cattle and NSBA charges must still be paid on all classes even if these are assessed in the class in which the non-pro or youth exhibitor does not have to pay the entry fee.

The stable life

No visit to a horse facility would be complete without meeting the dogs. At Lazy J Farm near Gallatin, Tennessee, the hospitality is warm and the horses are happy. At left is Joni Isaacson, owner of the farm. With her is Don Charest, who trains there. I’ll have more about Don’s connection to the latest Appaloosa celebrity, Dawson (Blazin Zipper), a gelding that appeared in the Brooks & Dunn music video, “Cowgirls Don’t Cry.”

Don’s Corgi companion is Marley. Joni’s Jack Russell is Missy.

Video star

While in the Nashville area for a visit with the various Appaloosa connections to the Brooks and Dunn music video, Cowgirls Don’t Cry, I was able to meet Blazin Zipper. He’s a young gelding owned by Dennis Skelly and trained by Don Charest. Better known as “Dawson,” the Appaloosa appears in the video featuring Reba McEntire and Ronnie Dunn’s daughter Haley. It’s a hit song that has generated quite a bit of positive feedback for both the POA and ApHC.

In this photo, Don has brought Dawson out for a brief walk to check on his recovery from a recent injury. Apparently he played a little too hard after being turned out for some exercise. He was scheduled to compete at a regional show this weekend, but is assigned to stall rest for a few more days.

I’ll post more about my chats with Dennis and Don. Eventually, there should be something suitable for publication in the Journal.

Additional options for “members only” web section

Thanks to David O’Keefe, our ApHC technology guy, for ongoing efforts to enhance the on-line membership experience.

We added two more listing options to the Members Only portion of the website last night. Those options are as follows:

View Sire/Dam Statistics – This option allows the owner of the horse to view the point and award statistics associated with the foals of the selected horse. It also lists all of the foals that have received halter or performance points or received medallions.

View National/World Show Entries – This option will display the classes that the selected horse has been entered into for the upcoming National or World Show. This listing does not display a history of National or World Show entries. It only lists those classes that the horse has been entered into for the upcoming show. This listing was developed so our members can verify their entries before a show.

Dave was also able to work on the error message that was popping up occasionally while users were using the inquiry functions and hopefully have it taken care of now. If you see an error message while doing a search, please be sure to let him know.

Idaho royalty

Part of the fun at the Idaho Horse Expo in Nampa this weekend is the opportunity to mingle with royalty. In this case, the young ladies representing the Idaho State POA Club are busy convincing expo guests to purchase raffle tickets and support youth activities. From left to right: Josie Montee, Queen; Taylor Renouf, Junior Queen; and Reagan Hoadley, Princess. They are all from the Treasure Valley area of Idaho. Each is also making plans to participate in an upcoming POA show in June. I’ll admit to their charm and could certainly see why they were given the task of promoting the breed and the organization.

I was also told it would be nice to include the club’s Web address, but it’s already in the photo. Just in case though, here it is: www.idahopoa.com.

Star of the expo

Just three weeks old and this little guy is already a celebrity. He and his equally colorful mother are stalled next to the ApHC booth at the Idaho Horse Expo in Nampa this weekend. Kids can’t resist and the adults use him as an excuse to come closer for a chat. Long-time Appaloosa breeder Gene Winchester is providing the horses and helping with the exhibit. The Saturday weather is supposed to be perfect for folks who want to get out and enjoy the event.

Update: The colt does have an official name – Owyhee Thunder. The dam is Betsy Ross, a granddaughter of Cowboy Justice. The sire is No Pretense, a grandson of ApHC Reserve World Champion Pretentious Me.

In addition to a trade show and other exhibits, the expo includes seminars, a silent auction horse sale, stallion avenue and lots of activities for the kids. The Idaho Horse Council is the official host.

Meeting the challenge

Emily Kvamme, Idaho Falls, decided she and her Appaloosa mare would make sure there was some color in the battle of the breeds event during this year’s Idaho Horse Expo. The “class” included 11 different breed representatives performing basic pleasure gaits plus a few extra moves such as side-pass and pivots. Each competitor was also given individual time in the center of the arena for a freestyle demonstration.

Thanks to Emily and her mare, Maid Elegant, a daughter of Maid’s Dream, for stepping up and stepping out to show off some Appaloosa versatility. The duo had good support from the judges and the crowd, placing third in the class.

National Show update

We received our first National Show entries in the mail today. The entry deadline is May 11 and the stall reservation deadline is May 18.

Membership Annual Meeting – Tuesday, June 23, 1:00 p.m.
Regional Club Workshop – Wednesday, June 24, 9:00 a.m. (repeat at 2:00 p.m.)
Board of Directors Meeting – July 3 – July 5

Award Banquets
There are currently about 100 banquet attendees for each of the youth and open/non-pro award banquets. We will continue to accept reservations (without late fee penalty) through the end of April. Starting May 1 we’ll charge a late fee but will accept reservations up until 72 hours prior to the banquet when a final head count is due to the caterer.

Slot futurities update

Wednesday, April 15 is the deadline for slot futurity purchases. To date, we have:

Three Year Old Western Pleasure – 8 slots purchased
Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle – 4 slots purchased
Non-Pro/Youth Western Pleasure – 9 slots purchased
Non-Pro/Youth Hunter Under Saddle – 5 slots purchased

In addition to these confirmed purchases, we’ve received a number of calls from customers who plan to fax/mail their slot purchases by the deadline. A final tally will be available next week.
