Market test, Appaloosa Heritage Collection

Many of you will remember the U.S. Postal Service commemorative Appaloosa stamp, released in 1985. The ApHC produced special envelopes that were postmarked Moscow, Idaho.

Working with Precision Engraving, a local awards/trophy business, we have created a souvenir plaque as part of what we’re calling the “Appaloosa Heritage Collection.” Now we need to know if you think ApHC members would be interested in the opportunity to purchase either the envelope or the custom plaque.

The envelope by itself would be offered at $9.95. The plaque is available for $29.95. If you tell us there is a market for these one-of-a-kind keepsakes, we’ll include them on our menu of merchandise.

The text in the lower left corner reads: Yesterday the Appaloosa earned a coveted place in western history with its colorful heritage. Today the horse is proving its versatility as a champion in many arenas.

Breed exposure in Horse Illustrated

I almost forgot to talk about the April issue of Horse Illustrated, which has a colorful Appaloosa on the cover and a nice breed profile article by Audrey Pavia. Her emphasis in the story is the versatility of our horses. She offers several examples of Appaloosa excellence in a wide range of disciplines and activities. There’s even a fold-out photo!

Audrey also provides information about the APEX program, Saddle Log and ACAAP. Good news and positive media coverage are really nice to see.

Judges list

We’ve had some recent technological issues with the search functions related to the Web site list of ApHC-approved judges. Most of those are fixed, thanks to Dave O’Keefe our IT guy. We also received a request to provide a complete, all-in-one-place list of all the judges, for folks who aren’t sure about the search criteria anyway. Happy to report that a pdf list of all the judges is now available. From the “show” menu, click on “judges” and you’ll find it.

ApHC Slot Classes update

Notes from Equitana

Diane Rushing, ApHC International Committee chairperson, forwarded this note from Daniel Noff and Uwe Tolksdorff, on behalf of the ApHC Germany (with only slight editing). They are promoting the Appaloosa breed at the 2009 Equitana Equestrian Sports World Fair in Essen, Germany.

We write to you here from the fair Equitana( Uwe and me, Daniel) the team who also was in Augsburg at the Americana. We feel so sad that you cannot be here with us. But we can tell you that the fair is a big success for us and our members. In only the first two days we have earned 5 new members for our German Club. Including on this mail there is a little spot from our horses and riders here on the fair and also a photo of our stand with the team. Here on the fair there will be about more than 300.000 visitors. We hope you will be lucky about our news for you and we wish you a nice day.

Sincerely,
Uwe and of course Daniel

ApHC adjusts World Show qualifying guidelines for regional clubs

Dear ApHC Regional Clubs,

The ApHC Board of Directors has approved, effective immediately, an increase of the number of qualifying nominations for the World Championship Appaloosa Show from one nomination to five in each class.

Rule 703.A.1.
Under the regional club system, a regional organization officially recognized as an affiliate in good standing with the ApHC may qualify up to five of its top five horses for the World Championship Appaloosa Show in each class. In order for a regional club to be eligible to nominate horses for the World Championship Appaloosa Show under the regional qualifying system, that club must have sponsored, pointed or co-sponsored at least one ApHC-approved show in that qualifying year and that regional club may only nominate horses in classes in which such horses exhibited in that club’s sponsored, pointed or co-sponsored show.

In order to complete this process for this year, regional clubs will submit your regular nomination packet listing your top 5 horses in each class. All of the top 5 horses will be eligible to receive a World Show invitation in that class unless they have previously qualified through the national point system or from another regional club.

World qualifying packets will be available for download on the regional club page of the ApHC website.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Best Regards,

Frosty in Denmark

We received this note of achievement from Dorte Christine Larsen, ApHC member in Denmark:

In December 2007, I imported a small cutting-trained Appaloosa gelding, FROSTY THE ZAN MAN, from North Carolina to Denmark. His barn name followed him over the ocean, so he is still known as “Cowboy.”

Cowboy arrived with loads of cow sense, but needed training in order to be ready for the show arena. So all during spring and summer 2008 I spent hours and hours in the saddle training my small horse. He proved to be an excellent ride also on the trails. He is a born cutting horse, always alert, ready, fast and at the same time, totally cool.

I am a total novice at cutting, so the show part I left to my trainer Brian Kronborg. Cowboy and Brian entered several All-Breed shows in Scandinavia during the summer, with good results. So we decided that Cowboy was now good enough to be entered at the ApHC European Championships 2008 in Aachen, Germany.

Upon arrival at the championships we also decided to try him out in working cow horse, just for fun. Cowboy won the European Cutting Championship 2008 and a silver medal at Working Cow Horse.

Need I say, that my small horse has also won my heart?

Office note: “Cowboy” was also the year-end, high-point performance horse for ApHC Denmark. Congratulations, Dorte, and thanks for sharing your story.

Thanks for your service

One of the few ways ApHC directors get “paid” for their service on the Board is to receive a lifetime membership and jacket. Dave Schjeldahl, Idaho Falls, Idaho (Terriroty I), and Stacey Sordahl, Fairview, North Carolina (Territory 5), will be ending their term of service this summer. At the Board of Directors meeting in Moscow last week, each was presented with a jacket. They were also given our sincere thanks for making the commitment to the Appaloosa Horse Club.

It’s my guess that members don’t fully realize the investment of time, money and energy required to serve as a board member. Whether you live in their respective territories or not, I’ll suggest that it’s okay to communicate with directors to say “thanks” for their work, not just when things aren’t perfect.

Thank you Dave and Stacey!

Idaho Idol

It’s always important to have a variety of talent within the overall mix of people serving on an association’s board of directors. In this case, Dave Schjeldahl, Idaho Falls, Idaho, is a cowboy poet, musician and singer. He will be a retired ApHC director as of the summer meeting, so it was especially fun to get a dose of Dave’s specialty during a break in the action at last week’s board meeting.

Thanks, Dave, for your contributions to the Appaloosa Horse Club and for being such a good example of charm, cheer and dedication.

Frank Larrabee steps down as ApHC President

Frank Larrabee has stepped down as Appaloosa Horse Club President in order to oversee the ApHC’s membership initiative. A unanimous ApHC Board of Directors elected Chuck McWhirter to succeed Mr. Larrabee as ApHC President and then elected Mr. Larrabee to the Vice President’s position.

The schedule of activities for the ApHC Board of Directors meeting this week in Moscow included an informal discussion of the business climate and priorities to address in the new fiscal year, which begins April 1. Agenda items such as membership, breeding, registrations, youth programs, marketing and finances were all considered critical topics. The Regional Club and Trail Committees conducted brief workshops in preparation for tomorrows slate of regular committee sessions.

Discussions in Moscow

Day One of the ApHC Board of Directors meeting this week in Moscow included a presentation by representatives of the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. The facility is interested in hosting the Appaloosa National Show if or when the ApHC contract concludes in Jackson, Mississippi. The Board was given a preliminary look at expansion and improvement plans at the fairgrounds and an overview of the city itself. Specifics of an official proposal will be provided in July.

In the photo are Tony Biancalana, Director of Internal Operations for the Iowa State Fairgrounds and Appaloosa Horse Club director Dave Schjeldahl, from Idaho Falls, Idaho.
