Battle Mascot

Each year for the Battle of the Breeds at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, show management and sponsors provide stuffed toy horses as giveaways. At the 2008 event last week, more than 5,000 of these little Appaloosa critters were tossed to the crowds. And there were crowds! Each competitive event in the series of five was a hit with spectators and the atmosphere was fun and informative. Compulsory skills, jeopardy jumping, precision driving, a four-barrel race and jeopardy trail each offered breed representatives the opportunity to show their stuff.

This was my second year to attend the Battle and I have to admit that I’m hooked. Of course, the international jumping scene at Spruce Meadows, a bonanza of a trade show and food from around the world all help. This year was made extra special by the appearance of Olympic team members from around the world. The U.S. and Canada teams were popular with autograph seekers and performed well in the competition. Riders were here to compete for more than $6 million in prize money. The winner of Sunday’s “CN International” earned $325,000.

More than 500,000 visitors come to Spruce Meadows during the year. The Masters event this week probably hosted 60,000+ spectators and fans (but that’s a conservative guess on my part). For complete results and other information, visit

Oh Steve, thanks so much for putting all those little Apps in the hands of fans. There is such a thing as PR and boy that is it in Spades!

I am a collector of the Spruce Meadows stuffed horses. Do you happen to have any extras of the one pictured or would you sell the one you have?

I’ll check in the office. We may have an extra, but I’m not sure.
