About the NVRHA
NVRHA combines the excitement of five events in one sport: working ranch horse (combining reining, working cow horse and roping disciplines), ranch riding, ranch cutting, ranch trail, and ranch conformation. While seeking excitement and fun with horses and education and friendliness among horsemen, the association seeks to promote the all-around, ranch horse. This is the horse of western legend-the horse that can do any job and be a trusted partner in the cowboy way of life.

ApHC Board Meets to Clarify Policies for Shows and IRIP

The ApHC Board of Directors held a special meeting August 28th to clarify some key issues for members and exhibitors. Regarding the trial period for announcing finalists in National and World Show open classes, rather than individual line-ups under each judge, the Board agreed to suspend the experiment. At the upcoming World Show, individual line-ups will continue for those classes in which this procedure has traditionally been used.

On the subject of pay-outs from the Performance Permit “incentive fund,” the Board clarified the process for determining how and where a horse qualifies for awards. A qualified horse can win only one award, but may certainly be shown in more than one zone. The award will be based on whichever zone provides the horse with the highest money-earning potential. If there is a tie, meaning the horse ends up ranked the same (for instance in second place) in two or more zones, the horse will earn the monetary award in the zone in which it earned the most points and will be removed from contention in the other zones leaving that money to be paid to the other eligible winning horses. Or, if the horse places first in one zone and second in another zone, it will receive the first place monies and be removed from contention in the zone in which it placed second.

A clarification was made to an earlier decision to accept horses registered with the Appaloosa Horse Association of New Zealand into the International Registration Incentive Program. The rule will specifically identify the Studbook Registry of AHANZ, and not apply to horses in a recently developed “Non-Studbook Registry.”

Exhibitors in Masters division of non-pro Trail, Western Riding and Reining are not required to earn a qualifying point in order to compete at the 2008 World Show. These classes are currently non-pointed classes at regional shows, therefore the qualification requirement forced exhibitors to compete and earn points in regular Non-Pro classes. The Board of Directors will continue to evaluate the various Non-Pro categories and requirements, but agreed that an immediate adjustment was necessary in this case.

Performance Department
We will be mailing premium checks from the National Show at the end of this week.

The World Show premium book is at the printer.

We are processing show results from the 10th of August. All shows held through the end of August count toward World qualifying.

Masters Exhibitors – News Flash

The ApHC Board of Directors has approved the following:

Exhibitors in Masters Trail, Masters Western Riding and Masters Reining are NOT required to earn World Show qualifying points, effective at this year’s World Show (2008).

This clarification was needed for the simple reason that these particular classes are currently non-pointed classes at regional shows.

Appaloosa cover girl

It’s always a pleasant bonus when an Appaloosa makes the cover of someone else’s magazine. In this case, the September issue of Horse & Rider provides the stage and the spotlight. The star cover girl is a filly sired by Maid Dignified and owned by Bernice Schroer of Carson City, Nevada. The photo is by Gail Bates.

Our own local celebrity Juli Thorson, H&R Lifestyle Editor, says it’s been quite a while since an Appaloosa made the cover of the mag. The feature story is by Robin Gollehon, a member of Team Horse & Rider, who discussed how to evaluate a weanling that you’ve bred or are thinking of buying. Most of you know Robin as an active participant in ApHC events at the national and even global levels.

A home for adopted Appaloosas

With the slaughter ban, challenging economics and an increase in the number of neglected and/or abandoned horses, more and more Appaloosas are being adopted by caring people. These horses are often sent to their new families with no pedigree or registration information. The Appaloosa Horse Club is pleased to be one of the few organizations offering registration to many of these “lost” horses.

Geldings and spayed mares which do not meet normal ApHC pedigree requirements or are of unknown pedigree will be accepted for ApHC registration with full rights and privileges if they otherwise meet the guidelines for Regular (#) registration: coat pattern or mottled skin and one other characteristic.

If you or anyone you know has adopted an Appaloosa, thank you for giving it a home. We can provide a record-keeping home through registration. Forms are available at appaloosa.com or contact the Registration Department at ApHC by calling 208.882.5578, extension 300.

ApHC World Show Earns Tax Rebate

worldhorse1.jpgIt is estimated that the World Championship Appaloosa Show contributes over $11,000,000 to the local economy in direct and secondary spending. The Appaloosa Horse Club received word from the City of Fort Worth and the State of Texas that a tax incentive rebate of $99,586 will be returned to the ApHC following this year’s World Championship Show. Based on economic impact analyses and a long-term commitment to the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, the monies have been awarded by the State of Texas under S.B. 1523, a legislative act intended to generate economic development by attracting and hosting major sporting and athletic events.

The ApHC would like to thank the State of Texas and the City of Fort Worth for guiding the association through the process to earn this award. With assistance from officials at the Will Rogers facility and the City of Fort Worth, a series of annual applications for funding has been made on behalf of the Club. Because of recent changes in the process and persistence by all the cooperators involved, funds for 2008 were approved.

“The ongoing efforts of ApHC leadership and staff has paid off,” ApHC President Frank Larrabee said. “These funds help offset losses incurred at the 2007 World Championship Appaloosa Show, and certainly are helpful as we work to maintain a wide range of programs and services for ApHC members in the current economic climate,” he explained. “We sincerely appreciate the positive relationship with our friends in Fort Worth and look forward to a successful event in October.”

Sharing memories

looking-at-photos.jpgOne of the favorite activities when horse people get together is comparing photographs. Jim Mischel, official photographer for many, many Chief Joseph Trail Rides, always seems to have a few albums available for viewing. Shown here at this weekend’s Palousey Trail Ride to benefit the Appaloosa Museum are Alice and King Rockhill, Craig Hatley and Jim as they share photos and stories from many years of close connections.

Worth the wait

food-line.jpgA definite highlight of each year’s Palousey Trail Ride is the Dutch oven dinner. George Hatley is considered the cook wrangler, offering advice and a few specific orders to volunteers who bring a wide variety of good stuff. There’s something extra special about biscuits baked in a Dutch oven. George says the most common mistake is made when folks apply too much heat to the bottom and not enough to the top. All I know is that if George is watching, the cooks pay attention.

Before I try to make a contribution, more practice is necessary, but even the mistakes taste pretty good.

Palousey Ride 08

looking-north.jpgA fund-raising event to benefit the Appaloosa Museum, the 11th Annual Palousey Trail Ride was held this weekend at the Pony Club grounds near Deary, Idaho. The facility is a popular and pretty spot for all sorts of equine activities. George and Iola Hatley, the Museum Board of Directors and a platoon of volunteers worked to make this a fun time for riders and non-riders alike. Mother Nature was kind enough to offer cooler temps and gentle breezes. Besides a leisurely ride, participants were treated to a Dutch oven dinner, cowboy music and good conversation. The Museum also had gift shop items for sale and a silent auction of donated artwork, artifacts and merchandise.

ApHC outlines fiscal management strategy

aphc-logo.jpgNewly elected Appaloosa Horse Club President Frank Larrabee and ApHC senior staff met recently to develop specific financial goals for the current fiscal year and to initiate a specific response to the realities of a changing economic climate. Rising costs are affecting the horse industry, the Club and its members. The strategy sessions were meant to address both the revenue side of the Club’s activities and all categories of expenditures with the primary goal of preserving members’ equity in the association and to end the year with a balanced budget.

“Our job as directors and staff is to work harder and smarter to maintain the core strengths of the Appaloosa Horse Club, provide honest stewardship of the resources necessary to maintain a high level of member services and sponsored programs, and to enhance the overall appeal of the Appaloosa breed” Larrabee said.

A number of cost-cutting measures and basic savings are included in the plans. Some of the key areas include reductions in staff travel, personnel costs and administrative expenses. Several proposals for cuts related to Board of Director meetings will be considered for both the short and long term. According to President Larrabee, the serious work of maintaining members’ equity should start with the board leading by example to evaluate all costs of doing the Club’s business. A reduction in the number of face-to-face board meetings, limits on travel expenses for directors and other controls are expected to be implemented.

Program expenditures specific to shows, trail rides and awards will be adjusted to account for significant savings as well. In combination with administrative cuts by the board and ApHC management, the club expects to realize a savings of at least $250,000 to help sustain current levels of member equity.

Additional strategies on the revenue side include repackaging sponsorship agreements, being more aggressive in reaching out to potential new supporters, providing a variety of Journal and web site advertising options and promoting the benefits of programs such as the International Registration Incentive.
