Sooner ApHC youth member and her mare win trailer

sooner0803erica1.jpgDuring the weekend of February 8, 2008, the Oklahoma Horse Fair, with representatives from both coasts and both borders came to Duncan, OK. Ranch horse and barrel racing events as well as a new trail horse competition entertained the spectators and featured outstanding prizes.

Erica Halterman, a 14 year old who lives in Duncan, OK riding an 8 year old, chestnut Appaloosa mare named Mama’s Design (aka Bridget) negotiated the obstacles better than 20 other competitors and took home a new Titan 2 horse slant trailer with tack room, lettered “The 2008 Champion Trail Horse of Oklahoma”.

The trailer was awarded by Gary Loman, producer of the Oklahoma Horse Fair. Erica competed against Paints, Arabians, and Quarter horses in a field of adults including her Dad, Martin Halterman on the only other Appaloosa, Blazin Hot Sister, a 6 year old chestnut mare.

The course involved leading the horse into the arena, mounting up, loping a figure eight with flying lead change, a gate, a ditch and dirt hill that had to be crossed, putting on/ taking off a rain slicker, an elevated bridge leading to a pen of goats that had to be passed, a walk over logs( real tree trunks), mailbox, and a back through L. “We knew that the goats would probably be there, so about a month ago we got a goat named Mickey, and our horses just love him”, said Valerie Halterman, Erica’s Mom. Thejudges also gave 1-5 additional points for the 5 fastest times, but Erica and Mama’s Design didn’t worry about the clock…Trail is not a speed event.

Friday night during a problem horse clinic, clinician Kerry Kuhn (who was one of the judges) talked about how he judged the mount of each trail horse…he was looking for a quiet horse that stood perfectly still until the rider was ready to go – Erica adjusted a stirrup, tucked in her shirt, rocked the saddle and then told Bridget by picking up the reins – “let’s go”. Out of a total of 200 points, Erica and Bridget scored 186.

They just did what they practice all the time at home and what the judge told them to do…….”show me that you have control of the horse and that you are working together as a team”.

With Bridget, Erica is the current 12-14 Age Division State of Oklahoma 4H Trail Champion, placed 15th in the Sr. Open Trail Class at the 2007 Appaloosa World’s in Ft. Worth, and was awarded the 2006 and 2007 “Horse of the Year” from the Sooner Appaloosa Club. Our family belongs to the Oklahoma Appaloosa Horse Club where both she and Martin are directors, the Sooner Appaloosa Horse Club, and this year we will belong and attend shows on the DalWorth circuit also. 61st National Show, Jackson

ns-logo.JPGThe show schedule is now available on the appaloosa.com Web site. Click on the National Show logo button at the bottom of the home page and select “schedule” from the items listed on the show page.

As you can guess, putting all the pieces together for a week’s worth of youth championships and another week of non-pro and open classes can be a challenge. The ApHC Show Committee works with staff to develop a schedule that takes a variety of needs and requests into consideration. It’s never perfect, but believe me, all the issues and concerns about horses in multiple classes, exhibitor age divisions, tack changes, simultaneous events in two arenas, making the best use of cattle, providing appropriate time for warm-up, dirt work, awards, efficient use of judges, and on and on, are part of the process.

Premium books for the National Show are being printed and will be mailed no later than mid-March.

“The Man Horses Talk To”

rayainsworth.jpgThe ApHC is proud to present Ray Ainsworth, “The Man Horses Talk To”. Ray will be giving clinics and will provide some hands on training techniques at the 2008 National Show in Jackson, Mississippi. Special note: Ray’s tv show has been ranked # 1 on RFD-TV.

Ray’s sincere goal is to make the world a better place for horses and their humans through communication. From a young age, Ray Ainsworth has studied the language of horses. As a winning jockey, trainer and competitor, Ray has developed and fine-tuned a resistance-free technique that he uses in teaching horses and working with behavioral issues of every kind.

Ray travels the United States giving entertaining and informative clinics to horse lovers. Ray teaches all types of horses how to behave the right way with a maximum of understanding and a minimum of stress to the horse. Ray works with young foals, old mares, abused horses, trailer-shy horses, as well as horses who will not allow their feet and ears to be handled and every horse in between. Along the way, viewers learn horse language themselves and are able to apply this knowledge to their own dealings with these amazing animals.

Ray was borne and raised in Raymond, Mississippi, and has spent the last fifteen years in Flora, Mississippi. He recently built a state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot facility in Flora that includes a 60′ x 132′ covered lighted arena. Ray’s love for what he does and his calling to communicate with these amazing animals has him making plans for expansion of the facility in the near future.

Australian Update

australia.jpgby John Etcell, AAA President

As you would be aware, the entire Australian Equine Industry has been severely affected by an outbreak of Equine Influenza (E.I.). There have been major ramifications on the Australian Appaloosa Association as a result of this.

The outbreak first occurred in August 2007, right at the beginning of the Australian Breeding Season. The impact has been enormous with a vast number of our members unable to show their horses, breed their horses or transport their horses.

Some areas in Australia remain unaffected, however the major impact has been felt in the States of New South Wales and Queensland. It is in these two States that the majority of members reside so the impact is enormous. These two States have been locked down since August 2007.

This has impacted on the scheduling of the Australian Appaloosa National Championship Show. Originally scheduled for April 2008, it will now be held in Dubbo, New South Wales from the 22nd June 2008 to 2nd July 2008.

Following our visit to Oklahoma City last year, our level of enthusiasm and expectation relating to the relationship between the ApHC and the AAA was very high. The exciting proposals that were discussed indicated a wonderful year in 2008 for the Australian Appaloosa Association. Unfortunately, The Equine Influenza Virus has almost brought the Australian Appaloosa Association to its knees and has altered these arrangements dramatically.

Having said that, I am hopeful that 2009 will be our ( The ApHC and The AAA ) new beginning. It is hoped that the international proposals can be implemented throughout that year. It is also hoped that other international delegates and guests who expressed a wish to visit the Australian National Show in 2008 may transfer that wish to 2009.

At the moment there is also talk that a member or a number of members of the AAA Board may visit the USA coinciding with the Appaloosa World Show later in 2008. Should this eventuate, then it would be the perfect opportunity to reestablish the relationships and proposals began in 2007.

Regards,
John Etcell.
President AAA

“We’d Love to Own” - part two

bocpic.pngVeteran Appaloosa youth horse Pistol Step K has been chosen to appear as the “We’d Love to Own” horse in Horse & Rider magazine’s April 2008 issue. As such, he’ll be seen by some 180,000 readers, who’ll also learn about his background and the traits that make him special. In the Jim Bortvedt photo selected by Horse & Rider, he’s ridden bareback by Sarah Hanna of St. Helens, Oregon.

Pistol Step K, also known as Joe, is a 1993 blanketed dun gelding by Royal Pistol K, and out of Precious Lady D, by Pok-A-Dan. Appaloosa Journal readers may recognize him as one of the horses in the ApHC’s “Breed of Choice” ad campaign. He’s currently owned by Tracy Rampone of McMinnville, Oregon.

Trained by Tim and Lori Larsen, longtime Appaloosa pros also of St. Helens, Joe’s amassed over 300 ApHC points in nine events. Just last year, he took Jamie Hanna to the reserve national title in novice youth hunt seat equitation. He’s been a member of the Larsens’ Silver Oaks Farm barn for a dozen years, ever since the couple saw him in an Appaloosa reining futurity at the World Show and brought him home to become a youth mount.

Lori describes Joe as “one of the coolest horses I’ve ever had–one of the few who comes to play the game every day, without fail.”

The ApHC is pleased and proud to have Pistol Step K chosen as one of only 12 horses a year to star in Horse & Rider’s “We’d Love to Own” feature. Another Appaloosa, Fairly Flashy, appeared in the January 2008 issue.

International Marketing

uslge.jpgApHC and at least ten other equine breed associations were represented at the recent annual meeting of the U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. organization. The group met in San Antonio to discuss export opportunities, hear updates on specific regulatory and policy issues, and to share plans for FY2009. One of the main consensus points was the need for cooperation among breeds to take our message to various international customers. Working together, for example, on seminars and clinics for international judges and show managers, trade show exhibits, and reverse trade missions is a good idea for several reasons.

Funding for internationl marketing is available through USLGE and USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. Applications for grants are submitted and reviewed before initiatives can be launched.

In FY 2007, the Appaloosa Horse Club has used funds to exhibit at or conduct trade visits in Germany, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and probably a couple of others I’m forgetting. We saw firsthand the benefits of establishing international relationships at last year’s National Show. A number of horses were purchased, the European youth exchange team participated in the show, and additional contacts were made.

Frank Larrabee, ApHC past-president and current chairman of the International Committee, attended the USLGE meeting along with Merida McClanahan and Steve Taylor from the office.

USLGE is a nationwide livestock-specific, not-for-profit, trade association representing the International Market Development interests of the U.S. dairy, beef, sheep, swine and horse breeding industries. Its representation encompasses the embryo and semen industry, livestock export sector, plus leading State Departments of Agriculture from top livestock producing states across the United States.

Territory 1 Membership Workshops

With the success of the Town Hall meeting held in December, some members from Territory 1 have organized workshops in various places in the Territory.

“Members have been asking for some time now to make their voices better heard by the Appaloosa Horse Club” says one of the workshop organizers. “Any Appaloosa enthusiast is invited to come and learn about the Appaloosa Horse Club, discuss its programs, and be heard.”

The first of these workshops will be held at the Dakota Magic Casino, Hankinson, ND on Feb 16, 2008 beginning at 9:00 AM. Gail Smith has organized a great day fro Appaloosa owners featuring discussions on regional clubs, the Appaloosa Museum and ApHC programs. A block of rooms have been set aside for the workshop for those who wish to stay overnight. For more information contact Gail at 888-801-1685, or at the email smithshowhorses@aol.com.

The second workshop will be held in Missoula, Montana on April 26-27, 2008, with Jan Phillips as organizer. This one’s to be held at Ruby’s Reserve Street Inn, with registration beginning at 12:00 PM on April 26. Contact Jan at 406-626-5331, or email her at fe_appys@bigsky.net

The third workshop will be held in Moscow, Idaho–the Appaloosa Horse Club’s hometown– on May 17-18, 2008. The first day’s activities will begin at 9:00AM with tours of the Appaloosa Museum to be given by George Hatley. Other members of the Appaloosa Museum Board will be available to answer questions. There will also be guided tours of the Appaloosa Horse Club offices that will show you how a registration is handled, from mail receipt to outgoing mail. Registration for the workshops will begin at 12:00 PM at the University Inn with the workshop to begin at 1:00 PM. Lynette Thompson is the organizer of the Moscow workshop. She may be contacted at 509-635-1114 or WLT1863@palouse.net

Workshops in Missoula and Moscow will discuss Appaloosa Horse Club Programs, the Appaloosa and the changing horse world, regional clubs and other topics that the discussions lead us to. Examples of questions to be addressed might be:

If you were to purchase a new breeding animal, would incentives to win awards make an animal more attractive?

Would you utilize the ACCAP program more if it were more user friendly and winners were given more recognition?

Suggest tools that the ApHC could give you that would make it easier for you to market the Appaloosa horse.

Do you belong to and participate in a regional club? If not, why.

As both the Missoula and Moscow meeting are overnight, there will blocks of rooms available at reduced prices. There will also be a fee of $45 per person that will cover Saturday evening buffet, Sunday morning brunch and 5 door prize tickets.
