Up the Nez Perce Trail

in the woods This photo is still at the very beginning of the “Chief Joe.” Riders are heading up the first long climb of the week. Horses are tested early by a sometimes narrow, often winding trail. It pays to watch the line ahead and to keep the appropriate space and pace.

This year’s segment of the ride is virtually the original route taken by the Nez Perce in 1877 as they attempted to elude the U.S. Calvary and make their way to Canada. Our Nez Perce friends on the ride can only partially share their emotions about being on the trail. The rest of us can do our best to appreciate how lucky our ApHC riders are to get this close to the history and heritage of our breed.
